As Habilidades (em japonês: とくせい característica especial) foram introduzidas na Geração III, e mantiveram-se com a chegada das gerações seguintes que foram trazendo mais habilidades para os novos Pokémon. Algumas delas já foram demonstradas no anime.

Actualmente são 191 habilidades diferentes, na Geração III foram introduzidas 77 habilidades que foram distribuídas pelos 386 Pokémon existentes na altura, sendo que alguns deles têm uma habilidade exclusiva. Quando chegou a Geração IV foram adicionadas mais 47 habilidades, e na Geração V introduziram 41 habilidades. A geração mais recente, a Geração VI, foi a que trouxe menos habilidades desde que o conceito foi introduzido como mecânica de jogo, sendo introduzidas 26 habilidades.
